Single-Engine Aircraft Rating

If you treat flying as a hobby, obtaining a rating that authorises operations on single-engine piston aircraft – commonly referred to as SEP (Single Engine Piston) – is well worth considering. This rating enables non-commercial flights for tourism and recreation in both controlled and uncontrolled airspace.
Which licences allow you to fly single-engine aircraft?
Anyone considering how to begin their aviation journey can do so through dedicated flight training courses. At the initial stage, it is worth obtaining one of the basic licences that authorise operations on single-engine aeroplanes. The most common are the Private Pilot Licence PPL(A) and the Light Aircraft Pilot Licence LAPL. Both allow the holder to act as Pilot-in-Command or co-pilot in non-commercial operations, providing a solid foundation for further development in aviation.
What is the Private Pilot Licence PPL(A)?
The PPL(A) – Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) – authorises the holder to operate single-engine aircraft with a maximum take-off mass not exceeding 5,700 kg. It is an excellent choice both for those planning a professional pilot career and for those who simply wish to pursue their passion for flying. The licence holder may act as Pilot-in-Command or co-pilot on non-remunerated flights.
What does PPL(A) training involve?
The training consists of theoretical and practical components. The theoretical part covers subjects such as principles of flight, navigation, meteorology, operational procedures, and flight safety, and may be delivered either through classroom-based instruction or via an e-learning platform.
The practical part comprises approximately 45 flight hours, during which the candidate gains essential experience under the supervision of qualified flight instructors. Throughout the course, all training materials are provided, along with ongoing support from aviation professionals.
Obtaining the PPL(A) licence opens the door to further development in aviation, enables safe and independent recreational flying, and provides a solid foundation for progressing towards the Commercial Pilot Licence CPL(A).
